Our Story
Ted and Sandy met at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. Ted spent most of his childhood years in Korea, while Sandy grew up near Koreatown in Los Angeles, CA. Ted then moved to Canada, where he later graduated from McGill University thinking of pursuing a career in Medicine. However, during his senior year, God made an offer he could not resist, which would eventually change his life forever. On the other side of the continent was Sandy barely entering into high school. By the time Ted was approaching his midlife, Sandy began her study in Social Welfare at U.C. Berkeley. It was during this time God began to burden her heart for the lost and poor. After graduating from college, Sandy left the comfort of sunny California and moved to Massachusetts to pursue her dream. And, along came Ted!
In the Spring of 1998, Ted vividly remembers his first encounter with Sandy when she first entered seminary. He was awed by her Californian beauty, but she does not remember meeting him at all, nor gave him the time of day for the years to come. However, God, the matchmaker, had orchestrated to plant the seed of love in the Holy Land of Israel in February 2000. Both Ted and Sandy were amusingly pressured to fall in love with each other by different people throughout the trip, but nothing happened. After the trip, Sandy started to write secret journal entries about a “TK” she was interested in. Then, to her surprise, on a beautiful New England afternoon in May, Ted asked her on an official date. And the rest of history….the big day came rather quickly on January 6, 2001.
God’s 2nd anniversary gift to Ted and Sandy was Abigail Jocelyn Kang who was born on January 3, 2003. Abigail means “joy of the father”, Jocelyn means “joy”. Indeed Abigail has brought immeasurable joy to the Kang household. On June 24, 2004, Isabel Joyce Kang added to the joyous journey of parenthood. Isabel means “consecrated to God”. Ted and Sandy receive these two precious ones as gifts from the Lord and have consecrated their lives and the lives of their children to be freely used by God.
Ted and Sandy love outdoor life. The ultimate dream vacation for them would be backpacking in the unchartered wilderness of Alaska, or even better, New Zealand for a month or two, catching food as they go. Ted is an avid flyfisherman, but these days, his fishing career has been reduced to teaching Abigail how to catch gold fish in her little tank.
God has given Ted and Sandy a burden for the unreached in China and led them to San Jose Christian Alliance Church in March 2002. Lord willing, they have a desire to move to China one day and share the love of Jesus with the Chinese people.
